Buffalo State College is assisting City of Buffalo Police with a pair of investigations into troubling off-campus incidents early Sunday morning. At approximately 1:00 a.m., Buffalo Police were called to Campus Walk—a private apartment complex next to campus—to disperse a large gathering within the complex’s outdoor courtyard. Around 4:00 a.m., Buffalo Police responded to a report of shots fired near the complex at 630 Grant Street. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. At this time, Buffalo Police does not believe the shots fired call is connected to the campus community.
While we are grateful no injuries have been reported, the reckless behavior last night by those attending the gathering will be fully investigated. As outlined by SUNY Chancellor James Malatras and Buffalo State President Katherine Conway-Turner on Friday, we will have zero tolerance for those found to have participated in the gathering violating COVID-19 safety protocols.
The Student Conduct and Community Standards Office will be working closely with Buffalo Police, Campus Walk management, and University Police to identify any student who attended the gathering. Any student in attendance will be subject to SUNY’s new uniform sanctions. Penalties could include interim suspension, suspension or removal from housing (for students who live on campus), or permanent dismissal from the institution.
As a precaution, Weigel Health Center staff will work with Campus Walk management this week to conduct pool testing for any Buffalo State students living in the complex.
While we applaud the work and vigilance of so many members of the campus community for doing their part to keep our COVID-19 infection rate low, unfortunately, the actions of a small subset of our community could negatively impact our ability to remain together this semester. We must learn from the mistakes of this weekend and hold your fellow students accountable. Wear a mask. Practice social distancing. And please avoid large gatherings.
