Update: October 19, 2020, 9:00 a.m.
The presidents of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) have made the difficult decision to cancel winter sports competition for the 2020-21 season to protect the health and safety of students and staff due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic.
"We are truly disappointed for our winter sports student-athletes who will not have the opportunity to compete this season, but understand that the health and safety of our students and campus communities must drive our decisions," said Buffalo State vice president for student affairs Dr. Timothy Gordon. "We still plan to move forward with providing as meaningful of an athletic experience for our winter athletes as we can within the evolving health and safety guidelines and look forward to the days when can we once again cheer on our Bengals in competition."
The winter sports impacted by the decision include men's and women's basketball, as well as men's ice hockey (women's hockey competes in the Northeast Women's Hockey League which has not yet officially announced its cancelation). The championships for men's and women's swimming & diving and men's and women's indoor track & field also have been canceled.
These teams will still practice at Buffalo State within proper health and safety guidelines starting on Monday, Oct. 26, and the college will continue to seek opportunities to give our student-athletes meaningful athletic opportunities throughout the spring semester.
The SUNYAC will continue internal planning for the possibility of spring sports. The decision on spring sports will be made at a future date.
